Manhunt Monday: Mother seeks killer who took her son’s life

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A mother is searching for a killer wanted for the murder of her son, a veteran and father of six.

Eric Logan died last year, the victim of a shooting during a carjacking.

"I prayed and asked God to protect my children and I asked him, whatever happens to my children to give me the strength to me able to handle it," Irene Stevenson said.

She's now depending on her faith just to make it through the day, but in June of 2017 her faith was tested when her only son, Eric Logan, was murdered.

Memphis police call it a carjacking gone wrong.

"He was shot in the back on the head twice," she said. "All I know is that I'm left without a son and he was my only son, he was my oldest and only son."

Homicide detectives say Logan had pulled into the driveway of his South Memphis home. The gunmen shot Logan and took his car.

"The persons responsible for this appear to be looking to steal cars, and they are going to take them by any means necessary," said Lt. Tony Mullins with Memphis Police.

Stevenson says this was not the first time her son was shot. Back in 2016, someone barged into his home, robbed him and shot him twice.

He survived, but he had to learn how to walk again.

"That's my child, I birthed him, that's my son," she said. "He was 46 years, one month and one day, that's how old he was when he took his last breath."

Stevenson has a strong heartfelt message for the person responsible for her son's murder:

"Whoever you are, you have impact a family and if you know anything about losing a loved one you will think again, but I pray to God that you get strength from God, I pray that you give your life to him."

If you know who killed Eric Logan, you are urged to call Memphis Police at 528-CASH. All calls are confidential.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A mother's heart is still hurting months after her son, a soon-to-be father, was gunned down.

Shirley Baker spends her nights tossing and turning and barely able to get any sleep. Two months ago her son Michael Norfleet was murdered.

Memphis Police say Norfleet had just left the 2-Star Grocery Store in Frayser when two men approached him. Officers say he was then robbed and shot.

"I can't call him. I can't see him. I can't hear his voice," Baker said. "I love you son. I wished that I could just hold you and tell  you I love you."

Paramedics rushed to the scene, but it was too late. Norfleet was already dead.

Detectives say witnesses heard the gunfire and saw the two men running away carrying a backpack. But no one is talking, making it difficult for homicide investigators to put Norfleet's killers behind bars.

"We all live here. How much are we going to stomach? How many homicides is it going to take to say enough is enough?" Lt. Tony Mullins, with the Memphis Police Department, said.

Baker says her son was on his way to pick up his girlfriend to enjoy a night out on the town when he was shot. "They have torn me. I am so torn. My soul and my heart is just hurting me. It's just like I'm just dead," she said.

Baker says her son's girlfriend is five months pregnant with the couple's child.

Until Norfleet's killers are behind bars, his family will never stop praying for justice.

"People need to be aware of their surroundings a lot more. If you see something, no matter how small you it is, please let us know. It's our job to put the pieces together. If you give us what you have, we will put it with the other pieces and figure it out," Lt. Tony Mullins said.

If you know who killed 40-year-old Michael Norfleet, call Memphis Police at (901)-528-CASH. All calls are confidential.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The family of Tyrone McKinney and Montrell Tate are pleading for answers after they were killed at a red light in north Memphis.

Christy Tate knows how it feels to lose a best friend.

Memphis Police say her husband, Montrell Tate, and his nephew, Tyrone McKinney, were killed in November 2018.

"He was all my children knew," Christy said.

They pulled up to a red light at Jackson Avenue and Trezvant. That's when detectives say someone pulled up along side them, pulled out a gun and started shooting.

They were both hit multiple times.

"They were good people. They didn't mess with anybody. They were all about family, both of them," Christy said.

Police say Tate and McKinney crashed into a tree after the shooting.

Paramedics rushed them to the hospital where they were both pronounced dead.

Christy was at work when she heard about the shooting.

"I left my job walking. I ran to the med to see if he was up there," she said. "I went to speak with doctors. And they took me to a room, and they told me he didn't make it."

Her husband of 10 years is now gone, and his killer is still walking free.

Now Christy is left with the responsibility of raising the couple's three children alone.

"My youngest child slept with me and my husband every night. Now that Montrell is gone, we have to take medicine to go to sleep."

The couple's son posted an emotional video to Facebook after hearing about his father's murder.

In it, he said "I'm really said that my dad had to die, 'cause somebody tried to shoot another person. But they shot my dad. I'm just about to end this, because I'm going to stay strong for my family. And I'm going to do what I got to do."

Christy says police told her not to give up hope and that they are doing all they can to find the killer.

"They took people that were good men. No robbers or killers. They took hard working men away," she said.

If you know who killed 35-year-old Montrell Tate and 31-year-old Tyrone McKinney, you are urged to call Memphis Police at (901)-528-CASH.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two lives were forever changed after a shooting outside of a back-to-school party.

While the gunmen are still free, one of the victims remains in the hospital almost six months later.

James Moton counts his blessings. He was shot multiple times at The Oak Place Event Hall in Holly Springs, Mississippi in August 2018.

"I heard the shots and then I felt it, cause it hit me in my stomach," he said. "I parked the car. I got out and came up the sidewalk. I was just standing there. That's all I did."

Holly Springs Police say, seconds later someone opened fire on the crowd that was waiting to get into a college fraternity party.

"It's a miracle that this wasn't a mass shooting with the amount of rounds that was fired and the amount of people that was on the porch," Chief Dwight Harris, with The Holly Springs Police Department, said.

Moton was air-lifted to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.

The scars from the bullet wounds and seven surgeries are a constant reminder of the months he spent in the hospital fighting for his life.

"They had him bandaged. He was swollen so dog gone big that he didn't look like my son," Moten's father, James Bowen, said.

Javon Richmond, 18, was also shot that night. He was taken to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds.

One of the bullets hit him in the chest. The other one hit his neck.

Richmond has spent everyday since August 23 in the hospital paralyzed from the neck down.

"A person that young that young to experience something like this that early in life, you hate to imagine anything like that happening to anyone," Chief Harris said. "I want families to know that we are still actively investigating this matter."

Investigators are searching for two "persons of interest" in the shooting.

If you know anything, you're asked to call The Holly Springs Police Department at (662)-252-2122.

WEST MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A child playing in her front yard was shot during a drive-by shooting. And the gunmen are still on the run.

Jarvis Hopkins is thankful his daughter is going to be okay.

West Memphis Police say, in August 2018, 5-year-old Dakayla Anderson was playing in the front yard of her family's home on North 18th Street when two men drove by and opened fire.

"They say she's doing a lot better. But I'm glad it wasn't worse than it was," Hopkins said.

"Dakayla was out there talking to her grandmom, and a guy came by in a car and another guy ran across their yard," the girl's aunt, Zadie Brown, said.

That's when witnesses say the gunmen started shooting.

Neighbors say Dakayla was not the intended target but got caught in the crossfire. One of the bullets hit her in the leg.

Another bullet shattered Alindia McVay's storm door. "They shouldn't be shooting in nobody else's yard. I understand they was trying to shoot somebody else. But they shot a 5-year-old," she said.

Investigators say the gunmen need to be off the street before anyone else gets hurt.

"If they're willing to shoot at someone that is just walking by and you got kids outside playing in their yard, that makes me question what have they done before and what they're going to do in the future," Detective Lauryn Dixon with the West Memphis Police Department said.

Witnesses say the gunmen were last seen driving a blue family-style car with the back window possibly busted out.

"We are not going to stop looking for these people. We're going to keep working until we find something," Detective Dixon said.

If you know who shot 5-year-old Dakayla Johnson, you are asked to call West Memphis Police at (870)-732-7555. All calls are confidential.

MARSHALL COUNTY, Miss. — Deputies and investigators say they've done all they can to try and solve a murder mystery in Marshall County, Mississippi.

Deloris Bowen has had months of sleepless nights waiting for her son's killer to be brought to justice.

"I saw him take his last breath," she said. "Why would you do that? He loved us."

Jamon Moton and his friend Will Phillps were both shot in the head in January 2016. Their bodies were tossed out on the side of Moore Road in Red Banks, Mississippi.

When Marshall County Sheriff Deputies found them, Moton was clinging to life. He was transported to Regional One Hospital where he later died. Phillps was pronounced dead on the scene.

"I don't know how you could just take someone's life and throw them on the side of the road like they're nothing," Bowen said.

Investigators say they have followed up on several tips and have even developed a person of interest in the murders. But they don't have enough evidence to charge anyone.

Deputies say witnesses are being threatened and are afraid to come forward.

"I say to the family, 'Don't give up. Don't give up on us," a deputy said.

Moton's father says, to make matters worse, it appears his son was robbed after he was shot. "All his possessions were gone. His money, wallet, phone, we never received none of that. Not his phone or nothing."

The Marshall County Sheriff's Department is offering up to $15,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

If you have any information you are urged to call (662)-252-1311.

Memphis Police say Shield and Jordan were passengers in an SUV sitting at a red light at Airways and Ketchum when three cars surrounded the vehicle.

A car pulled up and just started shooting. No argument, no words were passed. No eye contact. They just started shooting," Shield said.

The SUV was riddled with bullets. Jordan and his friend were both struck.

"I turned to look at the kids, and that's when I realized that my baby was hit," she said. "I was like, 'Richard! Richard!' I was just calling his name. That's all I could do."

Shield's and her friend rushed to a police station for help. "I looked under his shirt and realized he was shot in the chest. I just knew that I had lost my baby. I heard my baby take his last breath."

MPD released surveillance video of the three cars involved. They're looking for a gold Chevrolet Malibu, a black Chrysler 300 and a grey Sedan.

Detectives say these cars could have bullet hole damage.

Robert Cawthon's mother wants to know who crashed into her son's car and left him for dead. "I never would have imagined living without him," she said.

In February 2018, 28-year-old Robert Cawthon was killed on Mount Moriah Road, near Pickering Drive. According to a report obtained by WREG, Cawthon had just pulled on to Mount Moriah when two cars speeding down the road plowed into his car.

CLARKSDALE, Miss. — Two cousins were murdered in the middle of a busy highway, and no one will admit to seeing anything. Clarksdale Police say the two men may have been murdered as a result of an ongoing feud between two communities.

Tammie Taylor is a mother dealing with the agony of losing a child. In September 2017, Taylor's son, Montez Watson, and his cousin, Shuron Burnett, drove from Jonestown to Clarksdale, Mississippi for a barbeque.

Clarksdale Police say their troubles started on a basketball court.

"Witnesses say Burnett made the statement, 'I'm not beefing with anyone, and I'm not here for anyone to beef with me," Investigator Tim Douglas said. Detectives say, when Watson and Burnett left the court, they were followed. They drove about a mile to the intersection of Highway 61 and Highway 6 before they were surrounded by gunfire.

"All I could visualize was my son out there begging for his life," Taylor said.

Burnett's body was riddled with bullets. He died on the scene. Watson was rushed to the hospital with gunshot wounds to his head and back.

Taylor says, when she arrived at Regional One Hospital her son wasn't able to speak. But he gave her a message she still holds on too. "He was on a ventilator, but he still could write. You know what he said? He said, 'Don't cry.' He wrote that on a piece of paper. He said, 'God got me."

Moments later, Watson took his last breath.

Investigators say the gunmen need to be behind bars. "If you car anything about a human life or about the families that have to live with the pain of losing their two sons, you would give the families some consideration," Investigator Douglas said.

If you know who killed Mortez Watson and Shuron Burnett, call Clarksdale Police at (662)-621-8152.

BLYTHEVILLE, Ark. — In March 2014, Ronnie Green was shot and left to die in the middle of a street in Blytheville, Arkansas. No one was caught. Green's brother, Elmer Green, says his family has been kept in the dark since the beginning of the murder investigation. "It still hurts," he said.

Family members say Ronnie was walking home when someone shot him several times at the corner of Delmar and Davis Street. "They are murderers. They don't care. They don't got no feelings for anything," Elmer said.

Elmer says his brother was a good man who loved his family and adored his children. That's why he spent years trying to get answers about his brother's murder. Now he wonders if anyone will ever be charged. "I went to that detective every Friday, every Friday. He told me the same old thing, nothing. So that tells me they're not looking too hard. A murder can take place here and it takes them forever to ever do anything."

We called the Blytheville Police Department several times, but no one returned our calls.

CRITTENDEN COUNTY, Ark. — It's been more than six years since a Memphis woman's body was found in a ditch near Marion, Arkansas. But Crittenden County deputies still haven't given up on the case.

Chief Todd Grooms has spent years trying to find out what happened to Daisy Taylor. Investigators say Taylor was from Memphis, but she was murdered in Crittenden County.

Grooms says a road worker found her body nearly 20 miles away from her home in November 2012. The home healthcare worker's body was found lying in a pool of blood on Grammon Road.

Taylor's neighbor's couldn't believe it when they found out. "She was a real nice young lady," a neighbor said.

Crittenden County detectives traced Taylor's last steps, hoping to find answers that would lead them to her killer. They discovered that at 10 a.m. Taylor's sister talked to her on the phone. One hour later, a man found her body in a ditch.

She had been shot three times.

At 12:30 p.m. Memphis Police found the victim's abandoned burned out car on Mason Street. When MPD officers arrived on the scene, her car had been torched, along with any evidence that may have been inside.

Investigators believe someone knows what happened to Taylor. "I'm really hoping for the sake of this woman and her family that somebody will give us some information that will bring some closure," Chief Grooms said.

HELENA-WEST HELENA, Ark. — The mystery behind a deadly carjacking still hasn't been solved. The victim's family says police have a good idea of who did it, but what they don't know is why.

Shedrick Lacy is angry, confused and hurt. In May 2018, his twin brother Fredrick Lacy was murdered in Helena-West Helena, Arkansas. Police say Fredrick was killed during a carjacking. "We are not going to stop until we get justice for our brother," Shedrick said.

Fredrick was driving down North Fifth Street near Baldwin when someone walked up to his truck and tried to force him out. When Fredrick tried to drive away, the suspect shot him several times.

"The person who did it also needs to pay for what they did. It's been hard on my family to not have a person in custody for his murder. That in itself is kind of like putting salt in a wound," Shedrick said. He says his brother was a nice guy who didn't have any enemies.

Police say, before Fredrick died, he was able to give officers a description of his killer. It was that description that helped detectives develop a person of interest, but officers say they still don't have enough evidence to charge anyone.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — For Marion Robinson, it's a struggle everyday just to hold it together. Four months ago her life changed when someone murdered her only son in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

Clarksdale Police say Kevin Robinson, 31, was visiting a house on Ninth Street when someone walked in and opened fire. He was shot multiple times with a high-powered rifle.

Robinson says her son was a good man who worked hard to support his family. He was looking forward to the birth of his son, who sadly was born the day after his death. The senseless murder has left five children to grow up without their father.

"Is this not something the two of you could have discussed if you had a problem with him? For you to do this to this magnitude, it says to me that you hated him for something," the victim's mother said. Robinson believes her son may have been set up to be murdered.

Police say they questioned several people and have even developed a person of interest, but there's not enough evidence to charge anyone.

If you know who murdered Kevin, you're urged to call The Clarksdale Police Department at (662)-621-8152.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Marilyn Lofties is a mother who's frustrated, heartbroken and fed up with crime. Her son, Darius Gates, was only 19 years old when someone gunned him down in The Peppertree Apartments four months ago.

"I'm very angry. I'm very angry. That was my child. Who gave them the right to take him from me?"

Memphis homicide detectives say Gates was visiting a friend in the apartment complex when someone shot him multiple times.

"My youngest son called man said, 'Ma. They just killed my brother. I was like, 'No. No. This can't be.' I said, 'Are you sure?' He said, 'He's gone," Lofties said.

She rushed to the scene, praying her son was still alive. But when she arrived, her worst nightmare became reality.

"My son laid on the ground all night long, and I never got to see him. When I saw my son it was at his funeral."

Lofties says she warned her son over and over again about hanging out at the apartment complex. She believes his murder may have been a set up since he still had belonging on him, including his wallet.

Suspects wanted for Dollar General robberies across Mississippi

MEMPHIS, Tenn. —A string of Dollar General Store robberies across parts of Mississippi have investigators on high alert with concern that the robbers could go for much more then cash.

Billy Hymans says he was hiding in the back of the store when three masked gunman robbed the Dollar General store in Marshall County, Mississippi two months ago.

"I just hear somebody come in screaming and yelling, 'Open the drawer or I'm going to shoot.' They could have killed somebody that night."

The Sheriff's Department says the Red Banks Store is just one of six Dollar General stores that have been robbed in the last three months. The first robbery happened March 10 in Attala County. Over the next 10 days three more stores were hit, including one in Abbeville.

Deputies say in each robbery three suspects entered the store just before closing armed with guns and masks covering their faces, and in each case several shots were fired. But when the suspects entered the Red Banks location they allegedly became more violent.

"They went and got the female from her work station, brought her back to the register where the safe was located, held a gun to her and fired a round into the ceiling," a witness said.

Deputies say the gunmen then grabbed cash and took off.

The same thieves struck again in two separate robberies in Benton and Panola Counties.

"They are just coming in waving the guns around. They have no control over their weapons," a witness said.

If you know anything about the crimes, call The Marshall County Sheriff's Department at (662)-252-1311. All calls are confidential.

CRITTENDEN COUNTY, Ark. — Some bold burglars are still on the run months after investigators say they pulled off a risky, silent heist.

Chief Todd Groom has been with the Crittenden County Sheriff's Office for more than 10 years and has put countless criminals behind bars. Two masked criminals are next on his list.

Five months ago, the men burglarized the Circle N gas station in Lehi, Arkansas.

Detectives say these crooks were so bold that they walked right in through the front door. It may seem strange, but it's not. Especially when you have the key to the front door and the code to turn off the store's alarm system.

"They thought they had disabled the camera, but they hadn't. I believe it was someone who formerly worked there or was currently working there," Groom said.

He says the thieves knew where everything was located, including the store's safe.

They were seen grabbing the safe and rolling it out of the back door. The suspects also took some of the store's lottery tickets.

Groom says surveillance video shows what appears to be a tan-colored Tahoe waiting behind the store.

"I'm bound and determined. We are going to find out who did this. We are going to get them."

Detectives have already charged one person with trying to cash in one of the stolen lottery tickets. Groom says it's only a matter of time before more arrests are made.

If you recognize the suspects, you are urged to call Crittenden County Crime Stoppers at (870)- 732-4444. All calls are confidential.

UPDATE: Second suspect in brutal murder of 20-year-old man captured

UPDATE:  The second suspect accused in an August 2018 murder in Memphis has been taken into custody.

Bryant Boyd was captured in Coldwater, Mississippi, U.S. Marshals announced May 29, 2019. He was wanted on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, attempted aggravated robbery, and employing a firearm to commit a felony.

According to police, the first suspect, a man named David Braxton, set up a drug transaction with the victim Kevin Jackson and a witness on June 6 on Vernon.  During the meeting, a man walked up and shots were fired. Jackson was shot in the head as he and the witness were trying to get away.

Officers arrested Braxton shortly after the shooting. During questioning Braxton reportedly admitted to police that he set up the meeting between the men with the sole intent of robbing them. The suspects agreed that anything taken during the robbery would be split equally among them, police said, but unfortunately for them the victims took off before anything could be taken.

Braxton and the witness reportedly identified Boyd as the person who shot and killed Jackson.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Police Department's investigation into a brutal murder led them to identify one suspect. But now there are two problems. Authorities don't know where he's hiding, and they say he may kill again.

"All you heard was gunshots. Like 'pow, pow, pow," a neighbor said.

Moments later, police cars filled the streets near Jackson and National in Nutbush. That's where they found Kevin Jackson, 20, behind the wheel of his car, clinging to life.

Neighbors who beat police to the scene were unsure of what they found.

"I didn't it was this close. I didn't know that he got shot right at the stop sign," a neighbor said. "He was shaking like he was having a seizure."

Paramedics rushed Jackson to the hospital. But his injuries were too severe to survive.

Homicide detectives say Jackson was set up to be robbed. They say Bryant Boyd, 21, was responsible for his murder.

Detectives have issued a first-degree murder warrant for his arrest.

"As long as he is out there. He is a danger to everyone," a detective said. "Mr. Boyd has already committed this robbery and killed someone in the process. He's going to kill again."

If you know of Bryant's whereabouts, you're urged to call Crime Stoppers at (901)-528-CASH. All calls are confidential.

Manhunt Monday: Postal carrier burned with acid in Raleigh

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A mail carrier is lucky to be alive after she was attacked on the job.

Three years ago Iris Webb was sitting in the living room of her Raleigh home when she suddenly heard an SUV pull up outside. She saw a man hop out of the passenger seat and run across her front yard at Soccoro and Fortner.

Just feet away, a young letter carrier was on her route delivering holiday mail.

"I thought he was running behind her to tell her that he wanted his mail," Webb said.

But postal investigator Gregory Newberry says he had something else on his mind and a cup of acid in his hand. Yes, acid. It's a chemical so dangerous that it could cause permanent damage or death if it comes in contact with your body.

Surveillance video obtained by WREG shows the man walking down the street and approaching the letter carrier just moments before the attack.

Detectives say he asked her just one question.

"He asked her where 444 was. She replied by asking, '444 what?' And then he suddenly threw the liquid on her. He attempted to throw it on her face, but she was able to put up her right forearm, so she was able to block a lot of the liquid."

The letter carrier could then be seen trying to get away.

Newberry says she then drover herself to the hospital.

"She sustained second-degree burns over several parts of her body, including her arms, face, back and legs."

Newberry says, after the attack, the suspect got into the passenger seat of a white SUV that was waiting down the street and got away.

It's not clear if the letter carrier was targeted or if the attack was random, but Newberry says he believes at least two people were involved.

If you know who attacked the letter carrier, you're urged to call the U.S. Postal Inspector Service or Crime Stoppers at (901)-528-CASH.

A $25,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the suspect. All calls are confidential.
